Whistling Sizzling Sixties

When asked about the best tune of the sixties you have to go Beatles, some would argue Beach Boys (Bob, Elvis, Cliff, Jim, Jimi, Janis, Otis, Souer Sourire). Today I would break one for Lazy Sunday by the Small Faces. Doesn’t it have just everything a guy wants in music. It has tune, legendary throat, it does NOT have a guitar solo, it does have a funny text (how’s old Bert’s lumbago) it has a kazoo, not just a kazoo, it takes the mick out of Mick. Still not satisfied? For bonus points, yes, he whistles, birds whistle, bells chime. Come on, close your eyes and drift away, close your mind and drift away.
We all can use the sunshine of the sixties. The freedom to do whatever sillyness came to mind is clearly audible, which makes this selection so enjoyable. You will forgive the bad rip of Richard Wolfe’s obscure Sunglasses. You get dazzled with French, South African and Keyan (as Roger Whittaker is also Kenyan), this Roger Whittaker is one the best whistlers ever. Some greatest hits of the sixties have whistling. Here we have Chubby Checker, Sheila with the French version of Daydream, Paul and Art, Manfred Mann, and the already mentioned Small Faces. Other Hot Shots with lesser known whistlers are Ten Years After, The Isley Brothers, Dr John, The Monkees, Canned Heat, Elton John. Half of this CD if filled with the lesser gods of the sixties. Actually Harvey and The Spinners might not ring a bell instantly, they are Harvey Fuqua with songwriter Marvin Gaye and they whistle. Others like The Newcomers, Rotary Connection (almost exclusively famous for having had Minnie Riperton as a member), Cartoone, The Ambers, Nicky Hopkins, Les Baroques, Mahotella Queens, and early reggae by Freddie Notes and The Prince of Darkness himself.
I almost guarantee this selection puts a smile on your face, and will make you as happy as the best sixties music can do. And please remember, when you think you haven’t heard a whistle, be sure, it will come, or play the song twice. Never did no harm.

Question: Which of the 4 bonus tracks do you like best?
    For me it's Ringo's tune!

  2. Thank you Koen. That Ringo's tune is quite extraordinary indeed. It took him so long, to have a whistle track, I just could not believe my luck when he whistled on his latest 2025 album.
