Johnny Osbourne - Musical Pumping

One day back in Holland, in the early nineties...

While browsing through the discount CD sections my eyes suddenly caught “Prince Jammy Presents: A Dub Extravaganza featuring Sly and Robbie: Uhuru in Dub / Osbourne in Dub”, a great find!

In those pre-internet days (for me at least) it was impossible to find any information about these tracks, but I didn't care, the music was excellent.

Main attraction for me at the time were Sly & Robbie, and I had already a few stray tracks of Black Uhuru, but Johnny Osbourne??

(Johnny Osbourne, Jamaican reggae and dancehall singer, who rose to success in the late 1970s and mid-1980s. His album “Truths and Rights” was a roots reggae success, and featured "Jah Promise" and the album's title track, "Truths and Rights”.)

Much later I managed to get more info, the Black Uhuru tracks were dubbed from Jammy's 1981 remix of their "Love Crisis" album, now entitled "Black Sounds Of Freedom".

In 2009 the whole set was rereleased as a double CD containing the original album, the remix, and the dubs + 4 additional tracks with U-Black.

The origin of the Osbourne dubs though were less clear, but not that hard to find.

Johnny Osbourne released 2 albums in 1983, "Water Pumping" and "Musical Chopper", both produced by Prince Jammy.

Most tracks of "Water Pumping"  and 2 of "Musical Chopper” were given the dub treatment by Jammy and issued in 1983 as Osbourne In Dub”.

The songs and dubs (plus 2 more which were only released as 45s) hold up well and therefore it seemed like a good idea to compile them as a 23 set entitled "Musical Pumping”, with the dubs following the songs, enjoy!
